We were given two greatest commandments:
1. To love the Lord, with all our hearts, souls, mind and strength
2. To love each other as we love ourselves
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)
I was thinking alot about this today. What does this mean? What are God’s expectations of us in this regard? How does this fit in with the original 10 commandments given to the Isrealites when Moses came down from the mountain?
1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength
We are made of body, soul and spirit.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12)
Our bodies are physical, it is the vessel that connects us to expressing ourselves to the world. Our soul is what connects us with our mind, our emotions, our feelings towards each other, human connections in the world. Our soul and body is what the enemy wants to take control of. Our spirit is what connects us to God, our Spirit is our inner most being. Our spirit is what needs to be connected with the Holy Spirit. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we receive His Holy Spirit that comes to live in us, in our spirit.
When we become children of God, the Holy Spirit then guides our path, helps us to recognize right from wrong, God uses His spirit to speak to us. When we live by the Spirit we have a natural longing to take care of our body and soul, but these are the two areas that can still receive the strongest attack and we need to be aware of this. We need to assess if we are living in Spirit, if we are, there will be no division in our body and soul from our spirit.
We will be free to love the Lord with all our body, mind soul and hearts. We will love Him with every part of our being and want to honor Him in every part of our being too. Automatically out of the respect and love we have for Him, it will be automatic that we would want to live in complete obedience to Him.
2. Love your neighbor as yourself
When we are living in the Spirit this is less complicated than it seems.
We want to protect ourselves right? So if we love ourselves enough to protect ourselves, then we can protect our neighbor too in order to love them.
We want to be happy / joyful right? So if we love ourselves enough to strive for happiness then we can bring joy to others in order to love them.
We want to live in peace right? So if we love ourselves enough to want there to be peace in our lives, then we can bring peace to others to show love to them.
We want to be comforted during hard times right? So if we love ourselves enough to do things that comfort us, then we can bring comfort to others going through a difficult time to show love to them.
God has shown us grace and mercy, let’s be better at showing each other the same grace and mercy.
This is also why it is so important to know our Identity in Christ and learn to love ourselves, as then we are able to love others freely.
Lets together be on a mission to do better, to be better and to love wholeheartedly. It’s God’s greatest commandment to us.
Be blessed my dear friends.
Lots of Love
