When Spiritual Warfare Gets Us Down
We were saved, in order to do good. Along with being saved, comes a battle. This is not where the enemy wants us, He knows that when we are with God, we are stronger. He knows we are headed to places where we can make a difference in a situation, in someone’s life, in an environment etc. So he places some obstacles in our way, some distractions.
When we are facing a trial, the enemy knows somehow we will slip into our default human emotions and get carried away by the hurt, anger and feelings of despair. Spiritual warfare is all around us, everyday and everywhere. The enemy uses the people in our lives closest to us, our finances, work, whatever he can. He will even try to use you for this same purpose in someone else’s life. He will stop at nothing. Although none of this can stop what God has predestined for us, it does set some distractions along the way.
We ask, but why does God allow it? God allows it because anything the enemy tries to use against us, God can turn around and use it to grow us, to strengthen us. He goes before us, before the situation, before it all and places other people, other situations that will bring breakthrough, that will bring hope. Where He can shine His light and bring us closer to our purpose and His plans for our lives.
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV
The enemy comes to steal kill and destroy. He doesn’t want our money or our material things, he wants our minds, our hearts, our peace. God’s plans are not to harm us. His plans are good, and perfect. He wants us to live in peace and harmony with others, He wants us to be whole, to be strong and to have victory in our lives. He wants the battles we overcome to be a testimony of His goodness for others.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10 NIV
As Christians, we need to be alert. We need to be aware of our emotions and not get carried away with them. If we see ourselves having sleepless nights worrying over situations or people, we need to know we are no longer living in Spirit but living in our human emotions. It will destroy us, it will make us sick, it will tire us out. This is exactly where the enemy wants us, feeling defeated. Don’t accept defeat, don’t get carried away by it. Rise up, child of God, you have strength within you that can overcome any trial. Tap into it.
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
Ephesians 6:11-18 NIV
We were saved in order to do good, in the lives of others, in the trials, and even in the conflicts we face. Put on the Armour of God and be ready for the spiritual warfare around you., look for opportunities to be humble, to be kind. Be still knowing that the battle has already been won and the victory is already His. Be this regardless of what is happening around you, regardless of those being used by the enemy, regardless of the trial you are facing.
“Be still and know that I am God.”
Psalm 46:10 NIV
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 NIV
Keep checking your heart, being sure you are not the one being used in the enemy’s plot in someone else’s life. It’s really important that we keep spending time in worship, in God’s presence and in His word. These are the tools we require to get through every day in this fallen world. Each of us take responsibility for our own actions in this life, and if we keep checking in with God on whether our words or actions display the fruits of the spirit, we will know if we are on track.
“Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone. At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.”
Titus 3:1-8 NIV
I have a dear friend who I am accountable to along my spiritual journey and whenever I face any spiritual warfare, I check in with her. She is someone I know I can talk to at any time of day or night, allows me to vent and then gets brutally honest with me, directing me back to God’s word. It’s important we are accountable to someone in our spiritual journey, they too help us recognize our own sin, where we’re at and what we can learn.
With spiritual warfare all around us, the Christian walk isn’t always easy but let’s be prepared and keep rising up.
Lots of love
